Although much of the songs I like have music reflecting the era they were recorded in, I know the value of a sound that could have been from a much earlier century.
As the music I like is generally rock, almost all my choices of what songs suit Pirates of the Caribbean are made based solely on the lyrics. However, I know how old-fashioned instrumentation can add to the effect, as shown below.
It should be noted, however, that not every acoustic instrument qualifies for this category. For example, although the Styx song Sing For The Day certainly features an ensemble of old instruments, it sounds more medieval than piratical, and therefore is not included. A pipe organ does not count either, since taking one to sea in operational form is only possible in PotC (or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and it is therefore not an instrument associated with my chosen settings, even though it definitely existed at the time. Finally, even if an instrument that fits this category is in the song, there has to be a significant amount of it without any more modern instruments. For example, while there is an acoustic guitar in Somewhere Now and Forever Now, it is not enough to be noteworthy, while Suite Madame Blue and Time for Me to Fly have longer uses of such a guitar but have it accompanied by a synthesizer and therefore do not count.

Featuring only a violin.
The most prominent instruments here could be the guitar and accordion of a historic sailor.
Although by and large a rock song, this one makes use of a solo acoustic guitar, just enough to be a standout in the regard of this category.
