Like most of 21st Century Breakdown, it is a difficult song with a lot of words, many of them polysyllabic. It is therefore not recommended for most potential parodies. For years, I even went so far as to consider it a 1-fodder song. However, as explained below, I eventually realized a big part of my problem with the song was just relying on the wrong franchise to give me ideas.
In my Pirates of the Caribbean-themed days, the song was everything I was afraid to try to do anything with. The theme was not particularly relevant, no rhymes suggested themselves, it presents what I would have considered red herrings as the lines Well, I’ve got a fever
and Vendetta, sweet vendetta
are more like my old, troublesome fan fictions and less like PotC canon, and even my infamous, indiscriminate Lego pirates never attempted the song. The one thing which could give it a chance was something I took years to let come - another franchise completely.
But, in the original AE game, there is a nemesis which spreads disease, and a battle erupted because of it. Having discovered the right connections (and already hoped to use them to demonstrate how to use references to illness in a song correctly), I put them to use, and managed to leave an impressive number of words unchanged.
